A classic hike that everyone should have on their bucket list.

Ray was the fearless leader that guided a party from the Legalameetse Mountains to the Wolkberg Hut, on a super classic hike that has to be done once to really experience the Limpopo Mountains.

Day 1 saw the party meeting at the Legalameetse Office and with the kind help of of the Thompson’s we were dropped off and the hike started. Walking 8Km on Day 1 to bring us to a wonderful campsite just above a waterfall. Night came quickly and we settled in.

We were greeted on Day 2 with a spectacular sunrise, which after greeting it we set off on our first full day of hiking. Fold after fold of grasslands intermittently populated by patches of forests gave way to us eating lunch at a stream. We prepared for the big climb up a pass, the largest for the day. After a large ascent we came to our camping spot, and were rewarded with large cascading pools to cool off in before rigging camp for the night.

Day 3 was a massive day for the party, we ascended and descended the ‘Wolkberg Knuckles’, spent some time lost in the ‘Wonderwoud’, climbed up ‘Kruger’s Nose’, before finally having lunch at ‘Cleopatra’s Pools’. Knowing that the Wolkbeg Hut was only a short hike away brought a sense of satisfaction and loss knowing that the hike was almost over.

We spent our last night in the Wolkberg Hut in good company with fellow mountain travelers and spent the night sharing stories of past adventures and future plans. Day 4 saw everyone making their way down from the hut and getting back to the rhythm of life away from the mountain.

This is an ultra classic and you should jump at the opportunity to do this traverse if it ever comes up again!
